While the product description acknowledges "scuffs" and "scratches" it blames them on the material from they're made and not how they're packaged for shipping. You can buy cheap plastic electronics that come with tape across the surface to keep items from abrading in the package. I bought a set and both had scratches in the exact same spot on the convex part of the backrest. Each chair comes in a plastic bag with a thin piece of cardboard separating them inside the box. There is no padding or insulation in the package to keep the chairs from shifting and thus scratching. I'm sure Baxton considers the cost of returns negligible, but they should really consider raising the price of the chairs, improving the packaging, and thusly lowering the cost to their reputation.
